JOHN LENNON: MUSICIAN, HUSBAND, FATHER AND MAN
John Lennon helped change the face of music
forever. He never backed away from risk, in his work, or life. His sense of adventure
helped make the Beatles the biggest rock'n'roll act of all time. John was born John
Winston Lennon on October 9, 1940 in Oxford Street Maternity Hospital, Liverpool. John's
parents split up when he was only 5 years old. He lived with his auntie and her husband.
John attended Dovedale Primary in Liverpool along with George Harrison but they never met.
John started his own group, the Quarrymen. One day, a friend of John's from school brought
along his friend to one of John's concerts. The friend was Paul McCartney. John eventually
invited Paul into the Quarryman. In 1958, Paul introduced John to his friend from the
Liverpool Institute- George Harrison. As fate has it, George also joined the Quarrymen. In
November 1959, the group disbanded. In 1960, they formed a group called Johnny and the
Moondogs. The group went to audition for bigtime producers but at that time they didn't
have their own name. John thought of the name of the Beatles. But they ended up going to
the name Silver Beatles. Later they became just the Beatles. As you know they the rest is
history. One day, as John was leaving his home, he was shot to death by an apparently
deranged fan, Mark David Chapman, 25, outside his New York apartment. Few people ever saw
John during his last phase of his 40 years. But his music was always remembered. His many
albums include: Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Mind Games, Walls and Bridges, Rock'n'Roll,
Shaved Fish. John Lennon was a great man in his life and his memory will live on forever.

TRUE FACTS ABOUT THE BEATLES & THEIR SONGS
Penny Lane & Abbey Road: When Paul
wrote the song Penny Lane, we all know what a big hit it was. But, in Liverpool, Penny
Lane signs disappeared very fast. This was also true to signs on the real Abbey Road. This
shows just how much influence the Beatles had on people. Strawberry Fields: Yes, it
was a real place. It was a childrens home run by the Salvation Army in Liverpool. Perhaps
John picked this place because it was near his childhood home. However, since then it has
been demolished. Eleanor Rigby: Real woman or imagination? Well, there really was
an Eleanor Rigby in Liverpool, but Paul did not know her. He just made up the name. When
Paul first composed the song, The Father McKenzie was almost called Father McCartney. But
they found McKenzie to be the more common name. The song has been recorded more than 200
times. The Beatles: How did that name come about? It is said that John Lennon had a
dream where there was a man on a flaming pie, and he said, You will be Beatles with an a.
There may also have been other influences, such as Buddy Hollys band, The Crickets and in
The Wild One, the motorcycle group was called The Beetles. Lucy In The Sky With
Diamonds: No, it wasn't from LSD like everyone says. The name came from 4 year old
Julian Lennon when he described a painting he did in school. Hey Jude: Paul
McCartney wrote it for Julian Lennon, Johns son. First Encounters: Most people had
never heard of the Beatles in 1963, but Ed Sullivan would see them on Halloween of that
year. He was waiting for his delayed plane due the all the Beatles fans welcoming them
back from their overseas concert. When Ed Sullivan heard about the delay, he said,
"Who the hell are the Beatles?" Soon after this happened, he booked them on his
show on 1964. TV: The Ed Sullivan show was of course the first TV program in
America to host the Beatles (February 9, 1964). But, ABC & CBS had footage of the fab
four in November 1963 when Beatlemania was sweeping England. The CBS Evening News with
Walter Cronkite had footage of Beatles fans at a concert on December 7, 1963. And on
Friday, January 3, 1964, Jack Paars show was the first to have footage of them on a major
US show. He played a clip of The Beatles singing She Loves You. Recordings: On
December 17, 1963, James Carroll, a disc jockey at WWDC in Washington, D.C., was the first
to broadcast the Beatles on American radio. He played I Want A To Hold Your Hand, which he
had gotten from his stewardess girlfriend who brought the single back from Britain. Since
the song had not been released yet, it was played every day, every hour. Capitol first
thought about court action, but instead released the record early. Sgt. Peppers Lonely
Hearts Club Band: Some of the people on the cover are Stuart Sutcliffe (one of the
Beatles early band members), Laurel and Hardy, Karl Marx, boxer Sonny Liston, Bob Dylan,
Lenny Bruce, Marilyn Monroe, and Shirley Temple. Shirley had visited The Beatles backstage
at a San Francisco concert in 1964. She was the only celebrity who had to hear the disc
before agreeing to using her picture on the cover. John's Songs: Timothy Leary and
Tommy Smothers did some of the background clapping on Give Peace a Chance, recorded in a
hotel in Montreal. Cher: When she was only singer Bonnie Jo Mason, she recorded the
novelty song, I Love You Ringo. Johns Aunt: She bought him his first guitar, but
Johns Aunt Mimi discouraged him from a career in music, saying, according to John: The
guitars all right as a hobby, but it wont earn you any money. Years later, John gave her a
silver plaque with that quote engraved upon it. -by Megan (Meg6212 - Vice President) Some

From: Ctmoonbeam HEY JUDE THE SONG
HEY JUDE
In the past few months I was watching a
television show and found one bit of news very interesting! That bit of news was about
Julian Lennon, he had just bought the original copy of "Hey Jude". The song
"Hey Jude" was written by Paul McCartney to help ease Julian's pain after his
parents {John Lennon and Cynthia Lennon} divorce. This song was one of the Beatles biggest
hit. Even though it wasn't on an album it was on one side of a single, the other side of
that single was "Revolution". The first time Paul was played the song to John it
wasn't completely done and there was one line Paul didn't think sounded right, that was
the line"the movement you need is on your shoulders.....". Paul was going to
change that line but John really liked that line and now that is the way the song is now.
This song is in my opinion one of the greatest Beatles songs, and will live forever in my
heart and probably many others too. CtMoonbeam {Editor-in-chief}

Lyrics to Eleanor Rigby
Ah, look at all the lonely people Ah, look at all the lonely people Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been lives in a dream Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door who is it for? Refrain: All the lonely people, where do they all come from? all the lonely people, where do they all belong? Father McKenzie, writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear, no one comes near Look at him working, darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there, what does he care? Refrain Eleanor Rigby, died in the church and was buried along with her name, nobody came Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave no one was saved Refrain **************************************************************** From: Paulie654
Paul's Guitar
When Paul went in 1960 to buy a bass for himself, he wanted to buy a REALLY nice Gibson bass. Being as Gibson is, their prices even then were painful on your wallet, so Paul bought the next nicest bass he could find, and afford; the Hofner. Originally bought for about 75 pounds, the Hofner is now priced at at least $1000, for one in "playing condition." The reason for these attractive "violin" basses being so expensive now is because of Hofner being bought out by another company in the mid to late 70's. They are no longer produced, and the ones that ARE floating around out there are hard to come by, and are one of most sought after basses today. If you are searching for one, my best guess on the model # and year of my favorite Hofners are the 500/1 1965 Hofner Cavern Basses. **************************************************************** We just found out about a great newsletter that goes out to some great fans. Atlanta Beatles Club - Fab Four Fest
November 9, 1996 Release: Immediately
Cobb Galleria Centre, Georgia Contact Person: Michelle Harper What happened when over 1,000 John, Paul, George and Ringo devotees converged at the Cobb Galleria Convention Centre near Atlanta, Georgia, on Saturday, November 9, 1996? There were melodies and memories, there was harmony and humor, but most of all - "every little thing" ended up spelling "B-E-A-T-L-E-S!" Bigger and better -- those are the words that were used to elucidate the second annual Fab Four Fest in the Atlanta area. There were more fans in attendance, there were more spaces for activities, guests and vendors, the Galleria Centre was conveniently located directly off a dominant expressway, there were numerous eateries in an adjacent mall, and there was the full size movie theater for the midnight showing of "A Hard Day's Night!" "I thought the whole experience was awesome," remarked one teenager as he walked through the spacious room where Beatles devotee Rick Glover had his astronomical collection of memorabilia on display. "I came last year - but this year is much better! I hope the people who put this thing on will have it at the Galleria again next time!" he anticipated. Extraordinary planning - that's how the whole day was able to "come together" so successfully! Michelle Harper, Bobby Khan and their Atlanta Fab Four Fest Team laid the groundwork for "Fab Four Fest II" immediately after their first event concluded. For nearly a year they budgeted, organized, coordinated, publicized, formulated and directed every aspect of the convention. Michelle Harper was the prominent "force" in bringing the day to fruition. Her unadulterated love or the Beatles and her deep dedication to this particular project was the contagious spark that made the day so magical. Her quiet, but confident presence, her genuine warmth and hospitality, and her sense of humor and heart brought the same spirit out in others. "She's the absolute BEST!," commented a Fest Staff person, "Without Michelle, this whole thing would not have happened - and all of us who know and love her appreciate her efforts more than we can say! She gives so much of herself to the Fest - she's truly a gift to all of us! " All Together Now!" Where else but at a Beatles' convention can you discover people of all ages able to encounter common ground on which to communicate and relate? A quick tally of the thousand-plus assemblage on November 9, showed that the crowd was truly an "all-ages" one, and that age differences did not matter a bit! There were many patrons with graying temples and faces lined with wrinkled recollections of the early '60's and their Fab Four heroes. Equally sharing the day were fresh-faced innocents, eager to catch the excitement of Beatlemania in any way, shape or form they could. "It's so nice to see the young people," stated Louise Harrison, sister of George, and founder of "Drop In," an environmental organization based on the Beatles philosophy of "We Can Work It Out." "It gives me hope that what the Beatles really stood for has truly been caught by a new generation - and it gives me hope for the future of our world! " Trivia and trinkets - there was "Something" for everyone at Fab Four Fest II! The "Every Little Thing" Trivia Contest was a hit with old and young alike! (What WAS the date of the final live Beatles concert in San Francisco?) The " Money Can't Buy Me Love..." Beatles Auction was hosted by Atlanta D.J. JJ Jackson and had bidders competing for articles such as a cigarette box from John Lennon's estate, two limited Beatles prints photographed and autographed by Astrid Kirchherr, the "A Hard Day's Night" poster signed and donated by the film's producer Walter Shenson, etc. The Beatles marketplace was host to vendors from all over the United States. The marketplace carried Beatles merchandise of all kinds, including rare, original '60's memorabilia to brand- new, 1996 Atlanta Fab Four Fest tee-shirts! "I'm getting this for my Dad for Christmas," remarked one teen who was holding an original vinyl copy of an early Beatles recording. "This is the only one he doesn't have in his collection. I think he'll be happy that I found it. " Lively guests and engaging topics kept everyone interested in "What Goes On" at a Fab Four Fest! Besides the aforementioned Louise Harrison, honored speakers and guests at the convention included Ken Sharp, co-author of Meet The Beatles; Gary Patterson, author of The Walrus Was Paul; Jeff Augsburger, coauthor of The Beatles Memorabilia Price Guide, Barry Tashian, author of Ticket to Ride and a musician who spent 18 days as part of an opening act band for the Beatles' 1966 American tour; Bill King, publisher of Beatlefan magazine and Roy Young, famed musician who played with "The Beat Brothers" in Hamburg, Germany. Each of these guests participated in a group panel discussion and in a question-and-answer session after their individual spots on the program. "I especially enjoyed Barry Tashian," commented one 40-ish looking fan. "My son asked him for advice on how a band just getting started should proceed-and he laughed and said 'Work hard, stay in school, keep your day job - and have fun!' You could tell by the smile on his face that this whole thing was a real ball for him! It was fun to hear his first-hand accounts of what each of the four Beatles was like, too." Extra-special live entertainment was the highlight of the Fest. Four college- aged young men from Griffin, Georgia, who call themselves "The Roaches" amazed everyone with their Beatles tribute act. From the moment they appeared on the stage in their black suits and boots, until the final note of their encore, the group had the full Ballroom of fans mesmerized! The Roaches have captured the true spirit of the early Beatles' music and enthusiasm, and their expert skills as musicians had everyone ready to "Twist and Shout" all night! "They took me back to that magical time in my life - when I was totally immersed in everything BEATLES!," said one male fan. "These guys are rally great! They have everything down to the letter - the chords, the vocals, the mannerisms, the excitement-they really are FAB!" he added, his eyes noticeably filling with emotional tears. It's not often that a tribute band has such an effect. The consensus at Fab Four Fest II was that the Roaches have a promising future ahead of them! Also on hand to provide entertainment was Bob Abdou and his Beatles puppets. Showtime! The "grand finale" and culmination of the full day of Beatles activities was the midnight showing of "A Hard Day's Night," in its original 1960's format. This particular print of the film was owned by producer Walter Shenson, and loaned to The Atlanta Fab Four Fest by him personally. The theater was filled to capacity, and the live audience was as enthusiastic as the one on the screen! "Paul, John, George and Ringo never looked better-I love this!" stated a woman in her 20's. From the singing, smiling and screaming around her - it appeared as though she was speaking for the entire crowd. "...and in the end...." tired but exhilarated fans left Atlanta Fab Four Fest II feeling the "awe" and peace that only the Beatles can bring. One of the Fest "team" summarized this "British Invasion with a Southern Accent" in this way: "...to Michelle, I say "Thank-You, Girl!" To Bobby, I say "It's Getting Better" all the time! To everyone who came - I say - we proved it - "all you need is love" - and the Beatles!" Fab Four Fest III is already in the works, with a tentative date of October 18, 1997. From:MsSmee I recently read an interview that Paul McCartney gave to a magazine, and in it he said that he's working on a new album, and that it will probably be released sometime in the spring or summer of 97'. He also might go on tour. He explained in the interview that he didn't want to release anything in 1996, mainly because of the whole Anthology thing. Paul was also knighted by the Queen of England on Monday, Dec. 30th, so now he's Sir Paul. I also heard that Ringo might be going on tour, but i'm not sure if it's true or not. Beatle Interview Book By: Adam Gertenbach
I just checked out a book called The Lost Beatles Interviews By: Geoffrey Giuliano. It is a 400 page book full of Beatles Interviews, many of which I found interesting. It is in order from 1963 to the late 80's with interviews from the band before and after their break up. I would give this book 3 1/2 stars. I would look in your nearest public library for it. From:ImagineBet
Anthology 8
The Anthology videos are really great. My fave was #6, because that one had all the stuff about Sgt. Pepper and that whole era. It was really cool how they had the interviews set up so it seemed like everyone was talking to each other, but, as I think someone said before, they needed to have more about their wives other than the occasional snippet about Yoko. Yes, I know we shouldn't pry into their personal lives any more than we already have (and we have quite a lot already) but it would have been nice to know all of what was going on in their lives during each time period. Anyway, I haven't bought it yet, but I reccomend renting #s 4, 5, and 6 and then waiting a couple months for the price to get below a hundred. - Bet ;-) From: Yelosub
Magical Mystery Tour-- What does that mean?
Well, its a trip you go on but you don't know where you are going. This is what the Beatles movie was about.(Kind of) John was the narrator, while Ringo (Richard B. Starkey) takes his aunt Jessie who is very big boned on this trip. In this movie you see mostly Paul and Ringo.. But John and George have a few bits. Like when(I think this is really funny) John has Little Nichola on his lap and and does his TAKE A GUESS bit and Nichola laughs... Just by John saying that right in the little girls face is pretty funny. Another funny scene is when Ringo's Auntie tells him to shut up, and he gets all hysterical over it. Another scene was when they were all singing on the bus, and the last funny part I can think of the racing in circles, with the very little orange car with an arm or 2 hanging and swaying about. That kept me and my friends laughing. I think this movie is good, even though some people don't. It has a weird sense of humor which makes it really good. If some people haven't seen it yet, go and watch it...it is good. When I went out and bought it, my dad wanted to sit down and watch it before he took me home. He said it was just as good as it 25 years ago. From: BeatlesNb1 I just rented Imagine:John Lennon and if you get the chance I recommend it for all Beatle Fans! It is an excellent review of Jonh Lennon's life. From the Beatles to his solo career to Yoko Ono it covers it all! His songs in it are also great, Beatles songs mixed with his solo songs. He performs Imagine several times in different ways. The video is 103 minutes, put out by Warner Brothers, and Rated R. EXCELLENT ***************************************************************** From: The Complete Guide to the music of the Beatles (EVERYBODY GET THIS...ITS EXTRAORDINARY) by: JOHN ROBERTSON typed and very slightly altered by: Beatles369@aol.com: The Beatles finished work on The Beatles (The White Album) in October 1968. It was released in November, followed in January 1969 by the Yellow Submarine soundtrack LP. That month, The Beatles also recorded what eventually became the Let It Be LP. And three weeks after the end of the basic sessions for that record, the group began work on another new album. Within the space of that year, then, The Beatles recorded or released around 60 new songs. So youd expect the last of these albums to suffer in the songwriting stakes. Abbey Road may have its throwaways, but many fans regard it as the best album The Beatles ever made. Its also their best-selling album. That isnt a view that John Lennon would have backed, though. He regarded the album as contrived, a deliberate repair-job on The Beatles image after the disastrous Let It Be sessions. George Martin had a more balanced view of Abbey Road: That whole album was a compromise. One side was a whole series of titles which John preferred and the other side was a program Paul and I preferred. I had been trying to get them to think in symphonic terms and think of the entire shape of the album and getting some form to it - symphonic things like bringing songs back in counterpoint to other songs, actually shaped things. And I think if we had gone on making records, that was the way I would have done it. But we were already breaking up. Abbey Road was the death knell. Martins admission that he sided with Pauls concept for the record rather than Johns is a tacit admission that the trios working relationship had become irretrievably fragile. Johns response was virtually to withdraw from the sessions. Abbey Road is very much a McCartney album, with strong cameos from George: Lennons material either sat uneasily alongside the rest of the songs, or else was a little more than hackwork. And yet: The Beatles never played or sang together more brilliantly than they did on Abbey Road. In particular, the much-maligned Side Two medley - assembled from a collection of vignettes - is instrumentally tighter than anything theyd cut since Revolver. And never had The Beatles harmony vocals been more inventive, or stunningly precise, than on this record. Countless times on the album there are moments of pure beauty, proof that art can sometimes force its way to the surface almost against the wishes of its creators. ************************************************************* Quotes: "She thought she was a cleaner, but she was a frying pan..."
