Getting Started |
 |
Ok, so you've
decided you want to make a homepage? It's really pretty easy, even if you know
nothing about computers or html. If you just want to make a simple site, most free
online web sites will offer you a small amount of space and almost make the page for you.
This page will show you a few of these sites that will get you started with a free
account and some free web space.
- Geocities
- If you've been on the web at all, there is a good chance you've seen a few pages on
geocities. It is probably the biggest free web provider out there right now.
It will give you 15 MB of free web space to get you started. You pick a
neighborhood to live in and once you have found an empty space, you can start making your
home with their basic or expert editor. You also get a free email address when you
sign up. Once you are used to everything, you may also make your pages offline and
upload them to your site by using their EZ Upload Utility. When you're ready, you
can even pay to move up to GeoPlus which gives you even more space, a better url, and more
control.
- Angelfire
- This is a good one if you only plan to make 1 or 2 pages about yourself. They now
give you 50 MB of space and they do offer many online images that you can use for free as
well. They also provide a free email account when you sign up. Another draw
back besides not having a lot of space is that unless you are familiar with FTP( and even
if you are ), you might have a hard time uploading your own things.
- Tripod -
Here they offer a lot more content that just free web pages. They start you out with
11 MB of free web space. They also offer basic and custom editors, giving you
control depending on how much you know about html. If you decide you need more space
and options, you can pay to go with their Premium Membership for 22 MB of space.
- Fortunecity
- This site is setup with a city type idea, in which you pick a city to reside in and
build your home there. This site offers the most space I have seen so far. You
get 20 MB when you sign up, however, finding a free space can be hard sometimes.
- Xoom - This
site also offers a lot more than just a free website. You may know them for their
huge collections of graphics among other things. You get 11 free MB when you sign
up, plus not to metion all the cool clip art floating around.
- Crosswinds - I have
never had an account here before, so if you do try this one, I'd love to hear what you
thought. Someone who uses it told me about it. According to their homepage,
they give out unlimited free web space, as well as a ad free site. You also can sign
up for a free email address to go with the rest of the package. Worth a look.
- Eccentrica - I don't
have an account or much experience with this place either, but I have seen a couple sites
using this service and I haven't heard anything bad yet. The page doesn't seem to
offer much information, but it is free and it looks like a pretty good deal, so if you are
still looking for a good site, take a quick look here.
- Acme City - This site
provider is a little different than most. You have to be creating a certain topic
site to use this one. You get to choose from certain tv shows, movies, music, and
cartoons. If you didn't notice from the title, they all seem to be related to the WB
Network in some way. Things like Dawson's Creek, Charmed and Looney Toons.
With your free account you get free offical artwork, 20 MB free web space, free email for
life, message boards, home page builder, and html help. A great deal as long as you
want to make a site about one of their topics.
- Net Colony - This is
another site provider. They offer 35 MB of space for you to use for your site.
It seems like a pretty good deal, though I have never actually used this service
myself yet. If anyone uses this provider, please let me know what you think of
it.
- Hotbot - This is a
service someone asked me to put up here. I don't know much about it yet. You
get 5 MB of space with this account and they also offer free email accounts. There
doesn't appear to be a lot of rules about what can be used on these 5 MB, but I will tell
more about it once I find out.
- Homepage - This seems
like a pretty good place to check out - the person who sent me this link provided the
following info: It lets you do pretty much anything, in the means of designing, from html
to ftp, templetes to frontpage! It's great, the only downside would be you only get 10MB
of space but the easy name alone makes this the very best free webspace provider!
- Freeservers - This
one seems like a pretty interesting deal. You get 20MB web space, a custom
short domain name, unlimited email addresses, additional things like guestbooks and
counters, as well as the option to get the banner taken off of all of your pages for
only $5.95 a month. You can also get an additional 10MB of space for $9.99 a month.
And you can have a domain name hosted there for free if you want to do that it can save
you a lot of money on hosting.
- Gurlpages - I haven't
used this one at all yet. But it has been recommended to me a couple times. I
do know that you get a free email address with your account. You might want to check
it out
- Chickpages - I
haven't used this one either, but the same applies. You can get an email account and
webspace. This one should also be looked at.
- IntelCites - This
provider is one of the only places I know of to offer free web space with on ads, pop up
banners, etc. The catch ( there always is one it seems ) is that you only get 3 MB
of free webspace. But if you are just starting out this might be just the type of
place you are looking for. I suggest you read the rules to make sure you agree with
everything there and then if you like what you see, go ahead and sign up.
- EWebCity - This site
was recommended to me by one of my visitors, you get 30 MBs of space, a short domain name,
and no ad banners to have to put up with. This sounds like a good deal, so you
should check it out!
- Virtue.nu Hosting - This
site was referred to me by someone through email. They said it was a great host so
taking their word for it you might want to check this one out. They offer 6 MB free
webspace and many other free features.
- Homestead - This one
claims quick setup and allows you to sign up for as many sites as you want for free.
Each site gets 16 MB free space too, not bad for a starting site. It also has
a quick site tour you can take before you sign up to make sure it's the right one for you.
Check it out.
These are just a few of the Free Web Page sites there are on
the net right now. If you know of a really good one I have missed, please let me
know so I can add it here. I hope one of these places will help you out.
