Sightings

Have you ever met Malcolm somewhere or maybe went to a taping of Caroline in the City?  It doesn't have to be recent, it could be from a long time ago.  We'd love to hear your favorite memories.

From:  Trina
It was December 22, 1997.  My cousin, who lives in Bayside, NY, drove my mother, brother, and I to Macy's to pick up my aunt. After she got in the car we drove all over the city to try and find a parking spot, so we could walk around and see Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and eat.
Our choice of restaurant was the Harley Davidson Cafe. We were seated immediately.  On my family's way to the table, I spotted a familiar looking man sitting with an average looking lady. I figured after a while that it could be Malcolm Gets. I thought that there was a slight possibility, since I found out through several web-sites that he often goes to New York, and he's got that unmistakable hair (I am referring to that wonderful hair that seems to have gotten fluffier since last season).  Our table was in full view of "Mr. Gets" and his lady friend. I kept stealing glances just to make sure, but I didn't want to seem like I was rude, and staring at him-I didn't know if it was REALLY him or not.
My mom kept asking me what I was looking at, and I told her, "That guy over there. Doesn't he look familiar?"
My mom said, "Yes. He looks very much like that guy from that show you always watch."
        "Malcolm Gets?"
"Yeah. That's the one. It's him."
Well, my mom and I were convinced that it was him - just how many people do you see everyday that dress and look like Malcolm Gets?
On our way out, I felt compelled to ask for an autograph, or just to talk to him or something, but he was with someone (although, they didn't do much talking), and I didn't want to butt in on his evening.
My mom leaned over him slightly as she passed his table to smell him (In Houston, there is this radio station that has something called "Sammy Spy" which is part of the morning show program where listeners call in and report a celebrity sighting. Sometimes the callers win prizes for their sightings). The deejays always ask if the celebrity wore any perfume. My mom was sniffing to find out. She wants Houston Rockets tickets really bad.

I was an usher at the playhouse were he performed in several plays at the Gainesville Community Playhouse in Gainesville, Fl.   On one occasion he was late to the playhouse and rushed in and nearly knocked me and several other ushers over. Understandable.

One of the best roles that he performed was "Jonathan Harker" in Dracula. He would come through the audience to the stage. It was great. He also did several roles at the Hippodrome in Gainesville.
One of his brothers is Eric Gets. He used to work at the Gainesville Sun. On several occasions we would have lunch or dinner with friends and he always spoke about what Malcolm was doing on Broadway. Malcolm performed several Stephan Sonheim songs on Broadway. Just a little info.

( Note: This person is not a member, however he was kind enough to email us this bit of info - very nice of him! )

Summer of 1982 Malcolm "starred" in Pipen. True it was only Summer Stock, but I can remember drooling over him even then, as did every other female in Daytona Beach. When my parents hosted a cast party all of us kids had to spend the night with friends, but we have pictures in the family photo album of a sleeping Malcolm on our living room floor. Just thought I would share a memory. By the way, as if you didn't already know....the man can SING!!!!

My sighting is actually a close encounter of the third kind and took place in September of 1997. My friend and I are HUGE Caroline in the City fans and have had crushes on Malcolm from the very beginning- so imagine our suprise and the sheer thrill of discovering him at the annual AIDs Walk at Cheesman Park in Denver, Colorado!
I had just turned in my money and was getting ready to do strecthes before walking the 10K course, when my friend, who was leafing through the paperwork we'd received became extremely excited. "LOOK!" She yelled. "Malcolm Gets is going to be here!" We ran to the stage that had been set up and breathlessly awaited his arrival. He sang beautifully and played a keyboard they had set up for him. He was wearing silver sunglasses, a gray shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes. After the stage activity was over, we ran over to the side where all the big wigs were exiting. Someone called out Malcolm's name and he came over and signed autographs for a few kids and shook some hands. He was right beside us, signing a woman's book, and looked as if he was about to leave; so I called out "Mr. Gets?" He looked surprised when he turned towards us but he smiled and I asked if we could shake his hand. He agreed and thanked us for participating in the AIDs Walk, at which point I tried to thank him for being there to bring attention to the fundraiser. Then he shook my friend's hand (she squealed) and then he walked away. Little did we know, that helping with such a worthy cause would bring such immediate and gratifying a reward.

My husband, Mark, and I were on our honeymoon in Taos, NM just last week and saw Malcolm Gets at a bar and grill. This was on July 9th, 1999. He was there with a couple of friends, just having dinner and a beer. Not wanting to intrude on his evening, but still wanting to acknowledge him, my husband and I asked the waitress to offer him his next drink on us. He accepted and we smiled and waved through the window. (He was outside on the patio, we were inside.) Later on, just before my husband and I left, Malcolm came over to our table and shook our hands and thanked us for the beer. He seems to be a very kind man, he has a very soulful look about him, very sincere. I was thrilled to meet him, as I am a big CitC fan. I hope that others can take the initiative to be more discreet about their encounters with stars when they are in a "non-star" environment. It turned out well for us. We simply expressed our appreciation for his work and held out no expectations, and lo and behold, the next thing we knew we were shaking hands with Malcolm Gets! Very cool!

My friend just got back from seeing a play in New York a few days ago. I forget the name of the guy in the play, but he dresses like a woman and is called "Dame Edna" something. Anyway, my friend and his friend were at the performance and Malcolm was sitting across the aisle from them, in front of Joel Gray.
When the performance was over, my friend's friend, who's a friend of Malcolm's, went up to him to say hi. Malcolm gave my friend's friend a warm hug and then turned to my friend and said, "Hi. I'm Malcolm" and stuck out his hand to shake. My friend then shook hands and said, "Hi. I'm David. Nice to meet you." That was about it.
My friend said that Malcolm attended the performance with two friends of his (a man and woman) who are from Albequerque, New Mexico. Also, he noted, that Malcolm's hair has gotten longer than it was on Caroline and he looked "great" and "much better than the short hair."

I had the great pleasure of seeing Malcom Gets in concert on April 15th 2000. What a way to forget about your taxes!!  He was here to sing at UCLA with Susan Egan. She had the first half of the show, which was delightful. She is very talented indeed. But after intermission came Malcolm. WOW!
He started off with some Sondheim material, some well known, some lesser known, but each song sung with an interpretation to take your breath away. His range is magnificent! I don't know how many octaves, but he ran the gamut from a deep baritone to nearly soprano.  Later, he sang some of his own compositions at the piano (in the earlier group he had an accompanist) and they were great!! If you have never heard his own work, it is yet another of his talents unfolded. One in particular was an uptune about people mistaking him for other people on TV, then snidely remarking that they "don't watch sitcoms". The last line was that he was going to be on Broadway soon because "Fran and Barry" (Weissler, B'way producers) had seen his sitcom and loved him! Of course it loses in the description, but it was a great song.  He also told us stories about his childhood in Florida in a charming manner.
The show finished up with a few duets with Susan Egan, and then he brought down the house introducing the work of a new 19-year-old composer with a song about the first gay caveman - it was absolutely hilarious!! We didn't want the evening to end. It was indeed a magical night in the theater.

My name is Pamela Parker, I am from Gainesville, Fl. I recently was given the pleasure of meeting Malcolm.  He is from Gainesville and was doing a benefit for the Gainesville Community Playhouse.  The performance was 10-08-01, it consisted of an hour and a half of him sing and telling stories. It was funny because he was talking about how all these young people only know him from C.I.T.C., but in fact he is one of my favorite Broadway Actors... heeheehee... anyways there was a dessert reception to follow, my sister had gone with me, and I was content just having seen him live and in person and very down to earth (his family was there so it made him even more personable), but my sister refused to leave until I met him. I walked up to him, he was talking with an older man who was questioning him about what venue he liked the most, theatre, broadway, movies, etc. I stood patiently waiting my turn, paying attention to both the man's questions and Malcolm's responses when he turned to me and said, "And you are?"
"Pam," I replied
"Well it's nice to meet you thank you for coming and supporting the theatre"
"Oh of course," I replied, "Besides the fact I love the GCP, I jumped at the tickets as soon as I heard it was you, you are one of my favorite broadway actors."
He just waved a disbeliefed hand at me and said "Nah"
then he chatted and joked with me and my sister and the few other standersbye... for another minute or two... It was great!!!
Not only did he sing alot of my favorite songs but I got to meet him... heeehee...
